how to handle JSMF bridged forum when migrating to Joomla 1.5 ?
«
on:

My website (
http://www.joomlagate.com
) was built with Joomla 1.0.15 and has a forum built by JSMF bridged SMF v1.1.9.
I had enabled Joomla 1.0 native SEF long ago. At present I guess there are thousands of pages with J1.0 style SEF URLs were indexed by Google.
Recently, I am considering to migrate my website to Joomla 1.5 core.
However, the most difficult part are:
1. how to re-direct old J1.0 style SEF URLs to new Joomla 1.5 style SEF URLs?
2. how to handle my SMF forum because JSMF can't work on Joomla 1.5 even after I enable the Legacy mode.
I know locutus know more about Joomla and SMF and JSMF and PHP than me do.
Could you please give me some help on this issue?
I really hope I can migrate my website to Joomla 1.5 smoothly.
Thanks.

Hi Bajianpeng,
Solving Joomla SEF 1.0.x in Joomla 1.5.x:
Go to your administration > Extensions > Plugin manager > enable the "System - Backlink"plugin.

I will post my opinion on this in a short while over here.
Hint: As you can see I using SimplePortal as test over here...

hi, locutus , Thank you for such a quick response.
I know backlink plugin. I had read an article about it sometime before.
However, I don't want to keep the old style SEF URLs because there is NO keywords in the URL. If possible, I would like to use the J1.5 native SEF or some 3rd party SEF component such as Artio JoomSEF or AceSEF.
I have an idea that can solve this in theory: at first, we
reverse
those old J1.0 style SEF URLs to non-SEF/original/dynamic URLs with a special script, and convert those internal links in the database via this special script too. The result should be: all URLs and internal links on the J1.0 installation will be converted to non-SEF URLs. Of course we will turn off the SEF setting of J1.0 at the same time. Ensure that the old website can then run smoothly.
Next, we just use the Migrator component and migrate the old website to Joomla 1.5 core. Now we can use one tip from alledia.com than redirect old non-SEF J1.0 URLs to Joomla 1.5 URLs, or , we use Artio JoomSEF to redirect non-SEF URLs to SEF URLs.
Ok, the above idea sounds great. But I know nothing about PHP programming. So I hope someone else can do it oneday.
And, I did not mention how to handle the SMF forum while migrating.
My prefered solution is: use JFusion + SMF2 on Joomla 1.5 and still make forum and Joomla core integrated.
Since we can easily upgrade SMF 1.1.9 to SMF2, I think this method is possible.
The only problem is: how to
redirect/convert
old SMF 1.1.9 URLs and internal links to new Jfusion+SMF2 style URLs and links?
Maybe this need another special script.
But I have no ability to do any of above scripts.
Hope you will work out better solutions.
BTW, I noticed that you use SimplePortal here, but I still love Joomla 1.5. Thanks.

As I understand the function of the backlink option is that if configured the right way, it will convert old joomla 1.0.x (SEF) URL's to the new Joomla 1.5.x SEF URL's on the fly. This was a demand from the Joomla community. In the procedure you described you will lose your existing Goolge Ranking

I love Joomla too, but the user permission system is prehistoric. That one of the reasons why I am switching to a SMF portal. In my experience I found bridges quite buggy and patchy. I want for my customers a stable platform.

Did you also consider the option of SMF and Joomla stand alone and creating one template/theme for them?

No, I need users in Joomla and SMF synchronized. I want to build a Paid membership website after migration, so I must keep Joomla and SMF integrated.
Another alternative to Jfusion is: use Jfusion for user synchronization, but use
J2SMF
bridge for visual integration.
I don't know how to, I just heard this idea on the Jfusion forum. Someone succeeded but he said there were several files need to be modified manually, and he did not tell the details.
Do you have interest to improve J2SMF further? It is a good bridge but was abandoned too.
Someone had done some job on J2SMF:
http://nodwell.net/in-dev/71-integrating-joomla-and-smf
,but not perfect.
Hope someone can pick up J2SMF bridge and make it to work with Joomla 1.5 and SMF1/2 . This bridge is better than Jfusion solution because it uses com_smf not com_jfusion in the URLs. I think this will make it easier to redirect old URLs.
Thanks.

For a paid system you don't need to integrate:

I have been quite a l long time around here on the internet. Started with PHP-Nuke on my home built linux LAMP box. Switched over to Mambo and after that to Joomla. In my experience there is one great drawback for the Open Source concept: It's free in any way. I mean you can use it for free, but the developer has no obligation to maintain or develop the product. In the past I've seen a lot of (really nice) components, modifications and projects die in a slow way. Leaving their users with quite a big problem: no upgrade path, vulnerabilities and a lot of work (time and energy) for having to switch to another product. See for instance the JSMF Joomlahacks bridge and the J2SMF bridge you mentioned here above.
Therefore I have dicided to keep my websites as lean and clean as possible; no more tons of mods and components. Just Joomla and SMF stand alone and visually integraded by theme/template.

You are right, there is risk when we use open source free software.
For the JSMF case, those license restrictions is the biggest cause.
However, I still love SMF. I want to use SMF on my every Joomla site if there needs a forum.
Hope someday this can be solved perfectly.
Thanks.

Hi Baijianpeng,
This week I have finally found some time to set up my Linux Webserver. I was very curious if what I said above works as designed. E.g will an old Joomla link like:
Code:
http://www.example.com/content/view/37/64/
will automagically in the new Joomla 1.5 style, like:
Code:
http://www.example.com/lurus-ipsum.html
And yes, it works like a charm. Applause to the guys of Joomla!
So you don't need any 3rd- party SEF programs for the migration.

hehe, good!
I also tested the backlink plugin this week on my XAMPP server.
Yes, you are right, old J1.0 style SEF URLs can be re-directed to new Joomla 1.5 style SEF URLs, automatically!
That's great!
Now, I have only two problems left on the way of migrating my website:
1. I need a Migrator plugin for Remository to transfer thousands of old Remository component URLs to new Joomla 1.5 installation.
2. I will wait for the Jfusion v2.0 and use their integration plugin for SMF2 to migration my forum.
Thank you very much!

Did you also consider the option of SMF and Joomla stand alone and creating one template/theme for them?
Today I re-considered your suggestion quoted above. Since JFusion allows to sync users without visual integration (wrapping) of the SMF2 forum, I think maybe a standalone style installation will make it better for performance.
The biggest problem of this method is: I have to modify the SMF2 theme so that it will have the same header part , I mean the top navigation menus, as Joomla template.
I am going to use the default theme of SMF2, because I don't need to worry about SMF Mod installation when I using the default theme.
Then, my question is: do you know how to modify the default theme of SMF2 to make it looks similar like a Joomla template?
If this can be done, then standalone style integration is easy to do.
Thanks.

Hi Baijianpeng,
I just finshed a project just doing that. In my experience I would go for templates that are compareable both in Joomla and SMF. And tweak the Joomla template more than the SMF ones since the Joomla template much more simple. To insert the Joomla header you can use the include statement.

Looking back, "Easy" is not the word that come to mind ;-)

Glad to hear that.
Hope you will work out a easy way to modify Joomla template so that can get close style as SMF theme, and make it easy to include the Joomla header into SMF pages.
How about start from the default theme of SMF2? Find one blue style Joomla template and tweak it. I prefer to the SMF2 default theme because, when installing SMF2 Mods, the default theme needs NO more modification of codes.
Thanks.
